What is Prenatal Massage?
Prenatal, or Pregnancy Massage, is any hands-on massage therapy received during pregnancy. It's natural, safe and most of all extremely relaxing. It's also one of my specialties! Instead of a traditional massage where you lay on the stomach and then turn to the back, Prenatal Massage involves laying one side with pillows between the arms and legs for comfort. Halfway through the client switches to the other side. I generally recommend a 1-hour session for pregnancy massage.
According to the American Pregnancy Association, studies indicate that massage therapy performed during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health. They also mention other potential benefits of prenatal massage, including:
- Reduced back pain
- Reduced joint pain
- Improved circulation
- Reduced edema
- Reduced muscle tension and headaches
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Improved oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles
- Better sleep
I am a firm believer in Prenatal Massage. There's something so rewarding about giving expectant moms relief from their pregnancy aches and pains and allowing their bodies to relax. I generally recommend waiting until the 2nd trimester, but am happy to give Prenatal Massages during the 1st trimester with a doctor's consent.
